Research Middle Years Research - The findings of Ray's most recent research were presented on May 14, 2006 in a paper he delivered in Perth at the Middle Schooling Association of Western Australia Conference Motivation, Meaning and Management in the Middle Years. Based on focus group discussions with middle years students in six primary and two secondary schools in Melbourne's south east, the research showed just how strongly students value their teachers who challenge them to think and to produce quality work. The paper is available online. http://www.msawa.asn.au/IMSCPAPERS/IMSC - Daniels.doc Managing Change Ray commenced his work in qualitative research in the early 1990s as a part-time postgraduate student at the University of New South Wales. His masters level project was on decision making and conflict. He asked teachers, school council members and principals open-ended questions about decision making and conflict within the school context over a two year period, 1992-1993. In January 1996 he embarked on his qualitative study of change management for his doctorate which he completed in 2001. In-depth interviews and focus group discussions are powerful research methods which reveal the meaning behind the plentiful quantitative data which schools and systems now routinely collect.
